Herbal drugs are alternative drugs to herbal medicine. These herbal drugs have been used for their therapeutic properties for thousands of years especially in China where it has gained much following and prominence.
The following are ten herbal drugs that have been tried and tested by scientists. Their effectiveness as herbal drugs is without doubt, but they are not meant to replace prescription drugs.
Garlic. This herb is one of the most effective herbal drugs due to its ability to raise protective HDLs and lowers the LDLs and triglycerides or blood fats. Garlic is also effective in lowering blood pressure. It raises the body's level of glutathione transferase which detoxifies the body of carcinogens. Garlic is also antifungal and antiviral.
Hawthorn. This herb is one of the herbal drugs that help in the heart's pumping action by opening the coronary arteries to nourish the heart muscle.
Ginkgo biloba. This herb benefits visual function and improves capillary circulation resulting in increased blood flow to the brain. It alleviates a number of ailments such as vertigo, tinnitus, anxiety, depression and others.
Ephedra. This is probably the world's oldest herb used as herbal drugs. It is a bronchial dilator and aids asthma. Ephedra stimulates glands, muscles and tissue functions while suppressing others.
Licorice. This is one of the powerful herbal drugs that are antiviral and is used to treat gastrointestinal ulceration. It also increases bile secretions. It aids in chronic coughs and bronchitis being a decongestant. It also believed to decrease high testosterone levels in women with ovarian cysts and increase their fertility.
Bilberry. This is one of the potent herbal drugs that are antioxidants and benefit the eyes, circulatory system, brain and general health.
Echinacea. This is one of the most effective herbal drugs that aid in immune system. It can also activate white blood cells and stimulate the regeneration of the cellular connective tissue and the epidermis.
Milk thistle. This is one of the most beneficial herbal drugs for liver detoxification, regeneration and protection due to its ability to antioxidant properties which scavenge free radicals.
Astragalus. This herb has been used to boost immunity in China for almost 4,000 years. Astragalus can help strengthen digestion and immune system, raise metabolism and promote healing of wound.
Ginseng. This herb is one of the most popular herbal drugs. It also widely studied. It has around 3,000 scientific studies as a matter of fact. Ginseng increases memory, reduce cholesterol, protect liver from toxins, strengthen lungs and many other medicinal purposes.
